Description

The Milk Thistle is an herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. It can be identified by its bright green leaves with spiny lobules and its intense pink flowers with bracts. The active part of the plant are the seeds, rich in Silymarin that is the main active substance of this plant and consists of various molecules of flavanolignans. It also contains flavonoids and other essential nutrients, such as sterols and mucilage.

Properties

The Milk Thistle has been traditionally used as an antioxidant and anti-hepatotoxic (preventing liver damage). This action is achieved through:

Preventing the intrusion of toxic agents in the cell: it modifies its outside structure.
Stimulating activity of the substances that promote cell regeneration in the liver, which is helpful to counteract hepatic inflammation and to favor a correct liver functioning.
Moreover, the Milk Thistle neutralises free radicals in the organism. Its prophylactic use is more efficient than the therapeutic once the liver has been damaged.

Experience has also shown its usefulness in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, reducing meteorism and relieving tension and flatulence in the digestive tract, while increasing the appetite and physical capacity. It has also been demonstrated to have anti-cholesterol and anti-cholestatic activity.
